SUMMER WORKSHOP SERIES

Frank Zappa camp with IKE WILLIS

July 3-7, 10am-2:30

Cost: $500 / $450 for enrolled PGRA students

ike willis

Ike Willis, lead singer and guitarist for Frank Zappa from 1979 to 1988, graces the hallowed halls of The Paul Green Rock Academy to share his collected wisdom of all thinks Zappa with the amazing musicians of tomorrow. Ike is uniquely qualified to pass this knowledge on, and will be teaching students at the camp how to make music in the Zappa tradition. Students will learn and play covers of Frank Zappa songs and work on their own Zappaesque compositions and jams. This all leads up to two performances on Friday July 7th..the first at the close of camp for family and friends, the second opening for Ike Willis and the PGRA Showband at BSP in Kingston. This camp is a unique opportunity to study and play the work of a true master under the tutelage of someone who was there and helped to create this work.

IKE WILLIS was one of FRANK ZAPPA'S longest band members and collaborators, and from 1979's seminal JOE'S GARAGE album, through Zappa's final 1988 tour, it would not be an overstatement to call Ike "The Voice of Frank Zappa."

It was while in college at Washington University, St. Louis that Ike Willis and Frank Zappa met. As a guitar player since the age of 8, Ike was studying political science. He volunteered to help with the concert committee just so he could get a "Back Stage Pass" to meet Frank Zappa. The rest as they say, is history.

Ike is still upholding his promise to Frank. That promise is to continue on, playing the music of which Zappa had taught Ike oh so well. To this day Ike fulfills Frank's wish by playing with some awesome Zappa tribute bands from around the world. These shows are a continuation of Ike's collaboration with Paul Green and his students, which began in 2004 and have resulted in some incredible shows and a ceremonial passing of the torch to the next generation of fine musicians.
