The girl, the myth, the legend. Cyndi Lauper crashed on the scene with what amounted to a perfect record. Not one skippable track on it. She’s So Unusual titled the album, but also the artist. A gloriously distinctive voice and the ability to wield it like an opera diva have kept Cyndi Lauper in our ears and our hearts for nearly 40 years. A great show for all instruments and skill levels.
The Cure is perhaps the most well-known New Wave band which helped launch Goth Rock. Gloomy subject matter combined with a very strong look were undeniable influences on the genre. The things most people remember, however, are the wonderful hits…and the strong look. They Cure managed to cross-over in a huge way. I still remember the day that some cheerleaders in my high school switched from belting off-key Madonna songs in the halls to singing Cure songs. It was a wonderful thing to witness. A great show for all instruments and skill levels.
Fishbone. Just the name of the band is a sentence which speaks volumes. Though never really finding commercial success, Fishbone managed to raise quite the cult following and allowed them a career. The shows are always high energy and the musical output is truly mind-boggling. You will be expected to jump around a lot in this show. Join this show only if you want to work hard.
“You wanted the best and you got the best…KISS” is how the very first record I ever purchased opens. I completely agree. This show will be full of theatrics, make-up, costumes and of course, some of the most enduring rock anthems ever recorded. As a bonus, The Woodstock School of Art will be running a special class at no charge to Rock Academy students (regardless of which show they sign up for) where they will be making some of the props for the show. Inquire at the front for more info. There aren’t many keyboard songs in this show, but it will welcome all skill levels.
In honor of the late, great Michael Lang, Rock Academy is proud to present Woodstock ’69! This is music (and a concert) that not only defined a generation, but strongly influenced the direction music would take afterward. This show has everything, folksy ballads, fierce rockers and perhaps the most famous guitar solo ever recorded. A great show for all instruments and skill levels.
